QUALIFICATIONS

 

1.      What are your strongest qualifications for this position?

Atkinson (D) Davis (D)  

Serving as State Superintendent since 2005, I know the challenges of public schools and have visited all 115 school districts.  I've been a public school  teacher, educational administrator, and author of two textbooks.  I have a doctorate in educational leadership & policy, NC State; M.S. in Vocational Ed., Va. Tech; and B.S.,Business Ed.  I have a proven record of leadership & innovation.  

I am uniquely qualified to serve as the State Superintendent because I worked directly with students, parents, educators, community leaders, and other citizens as a classroom teacher for 30 years.  I was the first practicing teacher to serve as a full-voting member of the State Board of Education (1993-2001). 

My state and national experience make me a strong advocate for public education.

I have an undergraduate degree in Business Administration and I was raised in a family of public school educators.  In addition, I have experience managing public money as the Director of Public Affairs at the Henderson County Sheriff's Office.  I have policy experience, working with the General Assembly, while managing government relations for an agriculture business.

As Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives and as a Member for sixteen years, I have hands-on experience at the highest levels of state government including the crafting of more than eighteen state budgets ranging from eleven to eighteen billion dollars!

Experience working with four NC Governors and budget writing skills qualify me to be a strong leader!
