QUALIFICATIONS

1.      What are your strongest qualifications for this position?

Besse (D) Dalton (D) Dellinger (D) Smathers (D)

Extensive hands-on experience in dealing with the challenges of growth at the local, regional, and state levels.
--Two-term elected Winston-Salem City Council Member.
--Leader on regional organizations for economic development and environmental quality.
--20+ years on state policy-making boards, including Environmental Management, Coastal Resources, Climate Change.

--Attorney, educator.

I am best qualified because of the knowledge and experience I have from my 12 years of public service in the Senate, especially in education. As Co-Chair of Education, I raised teacher pay and lowered class sizes. We have made progress, but there is more to do. I will build on this foundation to improve education and prepare our students for 21st Century jobs and continue moving our state forward.

My strongest qualification is my experience as a top public official in the Department of Justice (Deputy Attorney General) and the Governor's Office (Chief Legal Counsel), where I helped promote economic development in WNC and protect the region's scenic beauty. I care deeply about, and have close ties to, WNC. My wonderful wife Jolynn was raised in Brevard and we were married in Asheville.

The lieutenant governor's office is not a law-making, executive or think tank position: It is a leadership position. I am a proven leader, who has demonstrated the vision, courage and compassion
needed to lead as a school board attorney, lieutenant colonel in the National Guard and mayor of Canton, the mountain mill town my family has called home for eight generations.
