AAUW Brevard Branch: Meetings, Events and Announcements

Local Monthly Meetings:

The Brevard AAUW Branch meets monthly from September through May. Each meeting has a program topic and provides an opportunity to socialize before/after the meeting. The December meeting is a holiday social gathering; the May meeting is the annual luncheon and installation of officers. Meetings are held at College Walk in the upstairs meeting room unless otherwise indicated.

All meetings, unless otherwise noted, are held in the upstairs auditorium at College Walk on the second Tuesday of each month, September-May.

October 13, 2009 7:00 pm Transylvania Vocational Services Program: Nancy Stricker, CEO of Transylvania Vocational Services and 2009 AAUW honoree, will talk about the development, mission, and services of TVS
November 10, 2009 7:00 pm - Women in Africa Program: Amye McCallie will speak on her experiences with women and self-help in Africa.
December 8, 2009 12 Noon - Celebrate the Season at our Holiday Luncheon Location: Connestee Falls Clubhouse Program: Seasonal entertainment provided by Transylvania County Schools’ students. We will also repeat our very successful holiday drive to collect art supplies for the TCarts Art in Schools program– see information in the newsletter
January 12, 2010 12 Noon - Transylvania County Schools Program: Dr. Jeff McDarius, Superintendent of Transylvania County Schools, will share the current and future goals for our school system. Bring a bag lunch.	Transylvania County Schools teaching everyone takes everyone
February 9, 2010 12 Noon - Wellspring Academy Program: Susan Borgman, Clinical Director of Wellspring Academy of the Carolinas, will discuss the mission and activities of this weight loss boarding school for teens and young adults. Bring a bag lunch.
March 9, 2010 7PM - Monarch Butterflies Program: Ina Warren of the Blue Ridge Monarch and Milkweed Association will speak on the monarch butterfly and its biology, habitat, and annual Mexican migration
April 13, 2010 7 PM - Living Wage Program: Jack Lockett of Living Wage Coalition will discuss the importance of local employer support in providing a “living wage”.
May 11, 2010 12 Noon - Spring Luncheon Women Who Make a Difference Award Installation of Officers for 2010-2011. Location : Connestee Falls Clubhouse

Un poco Espanol - Un poco Ingles
This modest Spanish/English phrase booklet with 52 illustrations and a glossary is available for city and county officials, social service agencies, health care providers and local merchants. Designed to improve communications between Spanish speaking and non -Spanish speaking individuals, the booklet is a joint project of the Brevard Branch of AAUW and the Transylvania Literacy Council. A red decal that states in Spanish, "Welcome to Our Hispanic Clients. If you need help, you may request it at the service desk," accompanies the booklet. A free copy may be obtained by calling the Literacy Council, 862-3524, and leaving a message.

Women Who Make A Difference Award

The Brevard Branch of AAUW instituted the Women Who Make A Difference Award in 1996 to honor outstanding women who have generously given their time and talents in community service. The award is presented at the Branch Annual Meeting in May each year and a donation is given to the Educational Foundation in her name.
The honoree may have worked in any field: arts, social services, education, government, etc. She may or may not be a member of AAUW.
